Artist's Description
Based on photos of an early morning boat adventure in Sumidero Canyon in the Mexican state of Chiapas. As we hopped in the van that early morning in nearby San Cristobal de Las Casas, the weather did not look promising. There was intermittent light rain and the skies were thoroughly gray but it was our only day to see this amazing deep canyon that is on a par in the geologic time scale with the Grand Canyon. Sumidero was carved through the ancient rocks by the Grijalva River which you see here reflecting the verdant green foliage that climbs the surrounding canyon walls.
The day may not have started out promising, but the skies began to clear while we were on the waters of the river and it was simply an amazing experience as you can see. Such a breath-taking sight seeing those canyon walls rise and rise into the skies above.
