Description
One of my first nights in Merida, I heard that they there was the chance to see traditional Yucatan dancing in the main plaza. As you can see, this is a traditional form of dance in post-colonial Mexico, not something from the Maya of old, but it was still fascinating to watch. All the men and women were dressed alike, women in white dresses covered in floral patterns and men in their white suits and panama hats. The dance troupe went on for ages on the closed off street adjacent to the zocalo. It was so beautiful to watch and I had a good vantage point which accounts for capturing the photo that this painterly image of one of the dancing couples.
This turned out to be practically a nightly occurrence. Multiple nights I went to see dancers performing in one plaza or another. The costumes seemed to be the most consistent feature of the dance, but only on that first night in the zocalo were they literally dancing in the streets of Merida, so that made that particular show the penultimate one for me.
