Description
The Covington County Courthouse is a beautiful example of Beaux Arts architecture from near the turn of the 20th century. It's a building I remember well from childhood trips "home" - my parents were both born and raised in Covington County. My mother was from Andalusia and even though they lived elsewhere by then, I was even born there. So it's always "home" in quotation marks even for me.
The current courthouse is the fifth to serve the county. The previous one was less than 20 years old when it was replaced. Andalusia and the county had gone through a population boom at the time and needed a larger building. Built of combed granite, it was designed by architect Frank Lockwood part of a family of architects who designed buildings of that era in the southeastern US. The building was completed in 1916 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.
