Description
There are some things a traveler just has to see, and the famous Roman Colosseum was always on my list for sure! After all, it's tucked into a world class European city that lies on top of thousands of years of history going back to when Rome ruled the Mediterranean and beyond.
So there was no question that on my first day in Rome, I not only saw the Colosseum, I stood in the long lines to visit it. Even on a winter's day, there was no shortage of people who wanted to see the remnants of one of the largest buildings in the Roman world.
As beautiful as it was in the golden afternoon light, it's sobering that this is just a tiny fragment of what was there. Most of the decoration is gone, never mind that some of the actual stonework was taken down and re-used for later building. And still it harkens back to a golden age in our combined past.
This view is literally from the line to get in and I suspect this same vantage point has been shared by a lot of armchair historians, actual historians, and travelers alike. If you've been I hope you were as awestruck as I was!
Note: Unsurprisingly the Roman Colosseum along with the Historic Centre of Rome is a UNESCO designated World Heritage Site.
