Description
My visit to the Dingle Peninsula on the 1st of January, 2010, was quite memorable. The incredible light and landscapes along the Ring of Kerry alone was off the charts in the beauty department, but I am also a sucker for ancient sites.
One of our last stops before the sun sank over the horizon was to see this standing stone near the Slea Head Road. Our guide offered a somewhat humorous and risque explanation for this standing stone near the coast. But I've since read that this 'Clogher Head Megalith' by its very nature of being a survivor of prehistoric times, no one has any good explanation for why it was erected or what it meant in the minds of the ancient people who placed it here. Perhaps it helped map the seasons, or maybe it was a memorial, or the spot itself was special spiritually and needed marking.
Whatever the case, it's that mystery that I find so intriguing. Standing there in that beautiful landscape, it felt like a special place, but that's me bringing my own meaning to the situation.
