Description
Honoring the dead with monuments is nothing new. Look at the ancient world from the Pyramids in Egypt, ancient Roman graves, to chamber tombs in Britain and Europe. We've long tried to make sure our loved ones are remembered. In my opinion, though, it was the 19th century when cemeteries hit their stride. This is when cemeteries became park-like places where Victorians picnicked. And it's when we started seeing such beautiful art amongst the monuments of our loved ones.
Such was what I saw while visiting Glasnevin Cemetery in Dublin. This massive 19th century cemetery is Ireland's largest non-denominational cemetery and final resting place to over a million souls.
The artwork of cemeteries can be quite classical. Check out this classicaly robed lady glancing to the heavens. She would not be out of place in a Greek or Roman museum, would she?
The work of a craftsman and bathed in warm sunlight on a winter day in Ireland...
