Description
Something of a sentimental look back on yesteryear. As far as I have been able to determine, the City Cafe advertised on this vintage roadside attraction is also a thing of the past. Apparently, though, it was the best place to eat in Monroe, North Carolina circa 1929.
This is based off a black and white photo my grandfather, Charles Edward Wilson, Sr, took. He wasn't a professional photographer but a decent number of photos of his have made their way to me. Most, of course, are close family and friends, but they all have that sense of the 1920s and 30's a time period when he seems to have often had a camera near at hand.
The dapper couple in the 1920's garb standing beneath the giant coffee pot, are, I'm afraid a mystery. I'd feel fairly certain he counted them as either friends or family, but no one I've spoken to has been able to identify them.
If you'd like to see the original warmly yellowed black and white, be sure to check out my gallery. I'm hard pressed to pick a favorite. I love the warm patina of old photos, but it was also quite fun to attempt to determine the proper colors for a scene photographed long before my time! Which is your favorite?
