Description
At the heart of this photo from Peachtree Street in downtown Atlanta is Atlanta's own Flatiron Building. It's one of those landmarks that may be more known to the history geeks than others, but it's Atlanta's oldest surviving skyscraper (and only the second to be built in the city). It's also known as the English-American Building, but since it has a strong resemblance to the Flatiron in New York City, it's more commonly called the Flatiron. Atlanta's version is slightly older but shorter than the more famous landmark in Manhattan.
Having now seen both, they each have a charm of their own, but Atlanta's was my first, and in this scene we can tell how far skyscrapers have come since the late 19th century, but I love how the little Flatiron is nestled among its newer contemporaries, as if sheltering beneath their wings. And if one looks closely at the surrounding architecture, it's a little tour of the 20th century in office building architectural form.
