Description
My original title for this piece was "Somebody's Castle" because there was something about it that was mysterious and felt like a building you'd seen in a Steampunk Anime or something of that general vibe.
As it turns off, steam does have something to do with this towering structure in the heart of Macon, Georgia's fading industrial district. But it was years and years before I uncovered that information.
This is what is known as a "coaling tower" - it was used to load coal onto steam powered locomotives in what is now a fading era of American history. Which explains how in modern times it was unidentifiable to many of the people I have shared it with over the years! How quickly time moves on and we collectively forget our own past!
In the end, this massive old coaling tower, apparently a giant among its kind, still looks to me an awfully lot like a prop from a soon-to-be-released sci-fi film - utterly alien and packed with mystery.
