This little cemetery on the Aran Islands was delightfully haphazard and an amazing mixture of new and old graves. This was one of the stops on the little bus tour I took around the island on one of the few pretty days I was lucky enough to have on Inis Mor in the midst of winter.
This is actually quite hallowed ground. This site was once a monastery on Inis Mor, but only ruins remain today. It's known as Teampall Bhreacain or The Seven Churches. The interesting thing I discovered is that right up until today it's considered quite a good thing to be buried on the sites of old monasteries and churches. That's what leads to the haphazard layout here, people determined to have their final resting place here no matter how they must be squeezed in amongst the other graves and church ruins.
