I love piers for some reason and they are a frequent subject of beach photos such that I know I'm not alone in the fascination. As a visual artist, they create a great line that leads the viewer through the image, but as an art appreciator, I think it's simply a connection with the bountiful sea that so many of us have and a dock or pier is a great illustration of that connection, it bridges the land and the sea after all!
This particular pier on the beach at Playa del Carmen was never open while I was there. I'm not sure why it was closed, but the absence of people on that Caribbean sea pier adds to the solitude in this picture.
The feeling of drama in this picture comes not simply from that solitude though, but from the marvelous skies. There had been several stormy days in a row while I was visiting the Riviera Maya. On this particular day, the skies were clearing which accounts for the golden light on the pier in the foreground, but aren't those skies over the Caribb...
