I'm not sure what I imagined in my mind's eye when I saw the famous Red Sea on the itinerary of my travels through Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, but what I saw when I arrived felt as if it had been ripped from the pages of a desert island. Our camp on the Gulf of Aqaba near Nuweiba was a little sliver of remote paradise in my eyes. It was quiet and remote, and it was a perfect location to wind down after a week of constantly being on the move from city to city and from one set of ruins to another.

That first afternoon as I planted myself on the beach next to my camera and watched the sun descend, I was in love with the Red Sea. It felt so exotic. Those mountains on the other side are Saudi Arabia. And of course, the Red Sea is legendary. I made a series of long exposures of the beach and the sea, and this was my favorite. It has an almost pastel feel to it with soft blues, yellows and pinks streaking through the sky and mixing in the waters, made smooth by the long exposure. This...
