Description
St. Albans is a little city about half an hour from London by train. It's foundations reach much further back in time than modern bedroom community, though. It was here that Saint Alban is said to have became the first British Christian martyr around the end of the 3rd century.
That's why there has long been an abbey church in the little borough of St Albans. Everyone locally still refers to this as "The Abbey" but technically it is a cathedral of the Anglican church.
If the church sort of feels like two buildings fused together, there's a reason for that. The tower in the distance is Norman architecture, the oldest part of the current building. The Gothic Revival part in the foreground was built in the 19th century. From what I was told when I visited, the people knew it didn't technically fit the style of the original church but this was what the wealthy benefactor paying for it wanted and the only other option was to allow the crumbling old church to fall to ruin. I somewhat like historical accuracy in architecture, but it looks so beautiful settled beneath that late summer sky that I'm going to let it slide.
Speaking of that sky - I can't tell you how excited I was as I stood there and saw that bright sun spot in the sky form. I don't know what it is technically but it's not the sun shining through a cloud. The sun was over my shoulder. I'm guessing it's some sort of reflection from the clouds? Whatever it was, the chance to capture such a neat weather phenomenon over a piece of beautiful old architecture was great!
