Sometimes photography is about learning to make the most of the moment. When we arrived at Playa Hermosa on Costa Rica's Pacific Coast, I spotted this huge piece of drift wood. I loved the shape of it, the size of it, the whole package. I resolved to take some photos of that drift wood on the beach before the day ended.

Well, every time I saw it again that afternoon, there was invariably someone perched on it. Not once did I walk by that some little gaggle of friends weren't sitting and enjoying the seaside together.

As the sun started falling towards the horizon, it hit me, this was the picture I was meant to take. This was the character of that old piece of drift wood on that Central American beach. It would be like a photo of an empty pub, it would feel incomplete.

So, this was my chance to embrace the moment, much as the people on that drift wood enjoying each others company were embracing their moment in the sun.
