Description
The first cathedral in San Cristobal de Las Cas was apparently built in 1545, but the beautiful baroque architecture we see today is from a rebuilding of the church in the 18th century. I wonder if that explains the cheerful colors? The bulk of the cathedrals I've seen in Mexico tended to be imposing stone structures. Plenty of churches with colorful facades, but this is among only a few cathedrals I've stumbled upon in Mexico wearing bright colors!
But it seemed to fit colorful San Cristobal de Las Casas. I've said before and will say many times that it seemed like a haven for expatriates from around the world in concert with the local inhabitants. A very different vibe existed in this city in Chiapas for sure!
The plaza in front of the baroque cathedral was filled with people pretty much my whole visit. Possibly because it was a holiday period? There were many villagers from surrounding areas that I'm convinced slept the night in the plaza. It was an unusual sight to see so many people just camped out there but it felt so normal and congenial that it didn't seem like a concern at the time.
San Cristobal is among many places I'd like to see again. I only had one afternoon with really good light to make the best of my time there as far as photography was concerned, but even a short afternoon with great light and eye-popping colors is something I count as a success!
