Description
It's a testament to how much I love the artwork of old cemeteries how much time I spent wandering the famous avenues of Pere Lachaise, a famous Parisian cemetery. It was after all the dead of winter!
The light that day was fabulous and I left with more than a handful of photos of those delightful old graves and monuments, but I think my single favorite is the one you see here. This beautiful Art Nouveau angel with all her characteristic vintage lines was a relief on the massive door to one of the crypts there.
She's clearly a defender of that family vault, and her battered garment as much as the tarnished metal suggests she's been on the job for quite some time. Isn't the work of the original craftsmen in this piece amazing? It almost feels as if she could step away from her post to greet us. Tell me cemeteries aren't homes to amazing and moving artwork?
