Description
This is a restored black and white photo of a collection of antique sports equipment. Of course, when the photo was new, so was the equipment! This was most likely taken some time in the 1940's at Eastern High School in Washington DC. It's part of the National Photo Company Collection which documented the Washington DC area between 1850 and 1945. The collection was acquired by the US Library of Congress in 1947.
This particular piece caught my eye because of my own father who was a coach and a long time fan of sports. I knew he would have found this particular photo quite nostalgic. It's a beautiful collection of American athletic equipment from the middle of the 20th century. It includes a baseball bat, baseball, and baseball mitt, a basketball, a football helmet and spiked shoes. I'm unsure if the spiked shoes are meant to be part of the football tableau or to indicate track and field? Maybe both! And I love the in-sit u shot that is clearly a gymanisum with the lines for the court and what appears to be soft gym mats on the walls.
In the end this is simply a beautiful glimpse into the history of sports in American schools.
