Description
Whether you're an armchair historian or an actual archaeologist, there's something you'll well understand about the magic of standing amidst the ruins of an ancient site like Monte Alban. This was the capital of this Pre-Hispanic civilization that ran its course well before the Spanish arrived. Now its ruins are just a tantalizing reminder of the culture that once held sway on the valleys below.
And its very much a land of riddles. I mean, we know these are important buildings but the precise functions in the society of the Cloud People is just hard to guess. This great plaza though seems likely to have been a place that people once gathered. The spot high atop a temple where I took this panorama may have been where a leader once stood and addressed the gathered people. Were they from all walks of Zapotec life or only the upper echelons?
There are Zapotec ghosts in the city below but they only whisper now...
Note: Monte Alban in Oaxaca, Mexico, is a UNESCO designated World Heritage Site.
