Description
I will always be awestruck by the work of our stone age ancestors, even modest ones like this standing stone on the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry. We took this sun filled drive around the beautiful Ring of Kerry on January 1st 2010. After several days of wet, sometimes dreary, weather, I couldn't think of a better way to begin a new year than seeing some of the best of the Irish landscapes bathed in light.
Even better for me is adding in a beautiful piece of ancient history, so ancient in fact it's not really history, it's prehistoric, i.e. before there were written records. What meaning did this stone, which I've found is known as a Clogher Head Megalith, have to the ancient people who erected it? Did it mark the seasons? Was it spiritual? Both? Really, we're unlikely to ever know, but it's a beautiful memorial to a long ago people who lived in what is now Ireland.
