Description
I've had the fortune of seeing more than my share of World Heritage Sites, and it's incredibly hard to pick a favorite. That said, the ruins of the Zapotec, or Cloud People, at Monte Alban in Oaxaca, Mexico, would still be way up there.
The moment we arrived up there, I was impressed with the view of the surrounding valley, and the clouds everywhere in Oaxaca felt near enough to touch but especially so at Monte Alban.
I couldn't have been happier with the skies that afternoon. After all, when visiting the ancient capital of the cloud people, wouldn't one be disappointed with clear skies? It just felt utterly appropriate to have picturesque skies.
The view in this picture is looking down from one of the taller temples onto the large main plaza. Once upon a time, on a festive occasion, this plaza may have teemed with people straining to hear their leaders speak from the top of this very temple. But it's all guess work no matter how educated. The indigenous people who lived here long before the Spanish arrived left only tantalizing clues like the ancient temples we see before us. But they sure had good taste as far as location didn't they?
