Description
Even some small cities and towns have iconic pieces of architecture, and there's no question that for Americus, a small college town in South Georgia, the Windsor Hotel is an iconic piece of the downtown architecture.
Built in 1892 in that grand Victorian Gothic revival style, the Windsor echoed a prosperous period in the history of Americus. When it was built, it was intended as a holiday destination for people people wintering from up North. By the time I first knew the Windsor, it had fallen on rough times, was closed, and there were genuine questions whether it would ever be renovated and in business again.
I've seen this story end with a wrecking ball too many times so I'm happy to have this picture of the Windsor in the 21st century in my gallery! It was renovated and re-opened for business in the 1990's. A real success story for preserving the historic fabric of our cities and towns.
Can you imagine this city block with a parking lot instead of that signature Victorian hotel? I sure can't!
