Description
What I most remember about Palenque is being hot! There, I said it, in January, it was hot. One can only imagine the summer months for the ancient Maya in the jungles of Chiapas, Mexico!
But the Mayan ruins were, of course, fabulous. Palenque is a well known Mayan site for a reason. Even with the wealth of temple pyramids cleared and easily seen, there's yet more hidden in the jungle growth surrounding the site.
Perhaps it was that hot and wilted feeling though that figures into this image for me. I was not feeling at the height of my powers as I stood in the remains of one Mayan structure and photographed another. And out of nowhere, this young kid bounds into my frame. I think he was making his own picture but I never saw for sure.
But its his sense of energy, sense of boundless adventure that I felt like I captured here. Not only wasn't I sorry he jumped into this picture. I was grateful. He gives this moment his own sense of youthful energy, the adventure of seeing new places.
Note: Palenque is a UNESCO designated World Heritage Site.
