Description
There was definitely still a festive atmosphere in Oaxaca on New Year's Day when I took this picture of the city's Cathedral - the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption. When I came through the tree-lined park in the zocalo, all the park benches were filled, and there was a constant hub of people passing by the church. But it was still far less than the night before when I rang in the New year with the Oaxcans in this same plaza. At that point, the square was packed and live fireworks were flying through the crowd! What a way to start the year!
I regretfully never made it inside the beautiful cathedral in Oaxaca, but I did read up on its storied past. The baroque church was built of green cantera stone in the 18th century. But like many of the churches in Oaxaca it has been damaged several times over by earthquakes and one in the 20th century destroyed its bell towers. The sturdy ones today help shore up the original elaborate baroque architecture above the main entrance. It's definitely a church with a typically Spanish colonial feel isn't it?
Note: the core of Oaxca is a UNESCO designated World Heritage Site due to the large amount of intact colonial buildings that make up the historic city center.
