Artist's Description

Colonial Williamsburg exists as it is today because the capitol moved during the American Revolution and it was never built up and over. It's the reason that in the early 20th century, original colonial homes and buildings still lined the old streets of Williamsburg and archaeologists could dig down and find the foundations of what was lost.

One of those buildings that was lost was the original home of Virginia's royal governor which once sat at the end of Palace Green. The building seen there today is supposed to be a faithful reproduction of what once stood there, and I give the builders credit. Gazing down Palace Green, it feels as if it's looked this way for hundreds of years, untouched by the passage of time.

I love that feeling, of standing in the pages of history, and that was what fascinated me about Williamsburg, the feeling that I was connecting with our colonial history, that the images I made there had a timeless quality to them. Looking back on my time there,...
