Description
You often hear that eyes are the windows to the soul, and I always wonder where doors fit into that scenario. Windows let one see in but a door, a door is a passage way. You enter and exit through doors. And quite often, the front door of a house is its best feature.
I found this to be especially true in colonial houses like those found in Merida's historic core. The side of these houses that face the street are often bare in architectural details. There will be a door and maybe a handful of windows, but the interior of the home really faces an interior courtyard unseen from the street. An architectural choice for safety or privacy? I'm not sure, but when there are even fewer details to show the world outside, the ones that do show become so much more.
Check out the elaborate details of that wrought iron security door! While I loved the deep blood red colors and the rustic worn white trim, it was the details of the door that stopped me in my tracks and begged to be documented. I look at this, and I'm immediately in Mexico again. I hear the hum of life on the narrow streets. I feel the warm sun beating down, and I want to see what's around the next corner. More colorful houses and more interesting doors to remember?
